Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston are the chic duo behind Bec & Bridge, a Sydney-based label known for elegant lines and chic silhouettes. A combination of sheer creative talent and savvy business sense has seen these two young Australians grow their label in leaps and bounds, both locally and abroad. Their style is fresh and represents a calculated excellence. .
Bec and Bridge met in 2000 on their first day studying a Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Textiles at the University of Technology, Sydney. “We started out just as really close friends doing all our assignments together and our style really just morphed together,” says Yorston.
These talented designers launched their namesake label in 2003 after forming friendship at a Sydney fashion school. The talented pair were soon noticed, leading to a host of campaign shoot appearances in various Australian glossy magazines. The bec & bridge hype had begun.
A strong design aesthetic underlies each collection and resonates with their signature style- contoured lines and sleek silhouettes, the look is the epitome of young, modern and chic. It is the pair’s meticulous eye for detail coupled with the ability to be commercially savvy with their designs that sets them apart from their peers.
They started customizing jeans for friends by spraying, dyeing and distressing them. The garments caught the eyes of boutique owners, who contacted Cooper and Yorston to place orders. That’s when we realised we didn’t even have our own [brand of] jeans, so we had better go and develop them,says Cooper. Bec & Bridge was born as a denim line, before expanding into womenswear.
In 2003 both women graduated from their degrees with first class honours.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia invited Bec & Bridge to exhibit their collection as part of the New Generation show in 2004. Buyers took notice and the label was stocked in boutiques across the country.
In 2006 David Jones approached Bec & Bridge about being involved in their collection for Winter 2007. David Jones remains a key stockist to this day.
The successful inception of the bec & bridge label led to department store David Jones picking up the designer label. Bec & Bridge clothing is also available online and via various boutiques throughout the nation. Australian fashion icons Jennifer Hawkins and Miranda Kerr are amongst the many fashion fans of this sharp label.
2010 will see the Bec & Bridge label displaying its talents at its third consecutive Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, testament to the labels establishment as a top Australian fashion label. Over the next few years Bec & Bridge focused on growing their business in Australia and overseas, winning the DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship for business acumen.
